Mechanicsville is located in the eastern part of Hanover County, is easily accessible from Interstates 95, 295 & 64 and a short trip into downtown Richmond on route 360. Drive up and down 360 and you will find shops, restaurants, and historical sites. Mechanicsville’s history goes all the way back to the Civil War, having been associated with several major battles and many of Mechanicsville’s sub-areas are named after these battles. In the area of Mechanicsville referred to as “Old Mechanicsville” stands a stone windmill.  The windmill has been a fixture and a landmark in Mechanicsville since 1974.  Locals almost invariably give directions starting with “If you’re at the windmill…” As of the census of 2000, there were 30,464 people living in Mechanicsville.
